WordPress basics you should know before you start

WordPress plan

What type of WordPress.com plan is right for you?

At WordPress.com, you can select one of three plans: Free, Premium ($99.00/year), and Business ($299.00/year). All of our plans have the primary features that make WordPress.com so awesome: a growing collection of well-designed themes to choose from, basic customization, unlimited bandwidth, and the friendliest support staff around. Plus, you don’t have to worry about hosting, security, backups, or software updates — ever.

You can create a beautiful customized site with our free plan — and no, you don’t have to upgrade your plan because your site gets a lot of traffic, or you want to build a professional presence.

If you’re not sure what’s right for you, you can always bump up to a paid plan in the future. Here’s what each plan offers:

Free

Your own WordPress.com address, like

example.wordpress.com.

3 GB of storage space for uploading images.

200+ free themes to choose from, with new options added weekly. (No premium themes are included in this plan, but you can buy one at any time.)

Basic customization: add pages and widgets, upload a custom header or background, integrate with your social accounts, and more.

Site statistics.
Staff, volunteer, and community support in the WordPress.com forums.

This plan provides no video storage and may show ads on your site.

Premium — $99.00

A custom .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, .co, .me, .mobi, or .tv address, like example.com.
Advanced customization:

choose custom fonts and colors and modify your CSS.

200+ free themes to choose from, with new options added weekly. (No premium themes are included in this plan, but you can buy one at any time.)

13 GB of storage space (enough for thousands of images and dozens of videos).

Site statistics.
Direct email support from our Happiness Engineers.

No ads.

Business — $299.00

A custom .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, .co, .me, .mobi, or .tv address, like example.com.

Advanced customization: choose custom fonts and colors and modify your CSS.

Access to 200+ free themes and 100+ premium themes, plus the ability to switch premium themes at any time.

Unlimited space for media (including images, audio, and videos).

Google Analytics.

Live chat and direct email support from our Happiness Engineers.

No ads.

Note that with these plans, you don’t upload your own themes or plugins — all this goodness is built right in to WordPress.com. If you need a site that requires a custom theme or specific plugins, a self-hosted WordPress site might be a better fit.

Handy tips for setting up your account

Use a strong password. Your security is really important to us. As with all of your online accounts, please use a strong, unique password to log into your WordPress.com account. This post on creating a strong password — and why you should care — is a good primer.

Choose a web address, title, and tagline. Your site’s web address is like the address to your online home — it’s where visitors can find you. When you register, you’ll receive your own unique wordpress.com address (such as example.wordpress.com). But some people like to nix the “wordpress.com” part. (It’s fine, our feelings aren’t hurt!) If you’d like to do this, you can buy a custom domain name, like example.com, as long as it’s available.

You can read more about your web address, and learn how to change it in the future, if necessary. Note that your web address and site title can be different, and if you’d simply like to edit your site title, go to My Sites, then go to My Sites → Customize → Site Identity.

Set up your public profile. Updating your public profile isn’t mandatory, as some people prefer to blog anonymously. But do fill in these details if you’d like to establish your identity. To edit your public profile, click your Gravatar in the top right to head to Me → My Profile. When you comment on sites across WordPress.com, this is the information associated with your account.

Be sure to also upload a Gravatar, which is the thumbnail that appears next to the comments you make across WordPress.com. It’s the primary image that people will associate with you.

If you’ve updated these general settings, you’ve covered the basics. (Virtual) high five!

Good luck !

The pros and cons of online advertising

When banner ads were first introduced by Global Network Navigator in 1993, few people understood the impact this would have on the advertising industry. To sum things up – it was a preeeeetty big deal. Think wildfire on a desiccated prairie.

While TV, direct mail and newspapers account for the majority of advertising spending, the Internet channel has grown the fastest since 2001. According to some very smart folks at Pricewaterhouse Coopers and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), Internet advertising revenues in the U.S. totaled $22.7 billion in 2009.

Many people’s eyes start to glaze over at the mere mention of online advertising and its accompanying menagerie of alphabet soup acronyms. However, trust us when we say that this type of marketing can blaze a path straight to your customers.

We’ve put together a list of pros and cons for your consideration:

Pros

1. Cost – compared to newspaper placements or TV spots, online banners are still relatively inexpensive.
Instant gratification – your customers can see your ad, shop and buy (if you sell products online) without leaving home. That sort of convenience is hard to beat.

2. Testing – if you create a brochure, you have to print and distribute it before you are able to measure response. On the Internet, response (or lack of response) is lightning fast. Also, since it’s relatively simple to switch out banner ads, online advertising gives you the ability to test creative campaigns and fine tune messaging. This can help increase effectiveness of your campaign and enhance results.

3. Geo-targeting – online advertising gives you the ability to geo-target your ads, ensuring that they are only viewed, and clicked, by your intended geographic and niche audience. This allows you to create localized messages that appear on national sites.

4. Constant exposure – your online ad works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Cons

1. Advertising overload – every advertiser wants consumer attention, and often there is simply too much information to digest. The solution is to develop creative campaigns that will cut through the clutter and strike an emotional connection with your target audience.

2. Measurability – the statistics you are able to gather on your online advertising campaign are so immense that they can often become paralyzing. That’s why it’s important to determine at the onset of your campaign how you will measure success – is it impressions, click throughs or sales?

3. Scope – while the vast majority of Americans are active online, there are still a number of people out there who are relying on traditional forms of advertising as a means to gather information on products and services. That’s why, in most cases, online advertising campaigns should run in tandem with other marketing efforts.
Too many choices – there are so many websites out there that it can be hard to identify the ones that will most effectively target your audience. Make sure you take the time to research the appropriate niche sites for your product or service.

As with any other form of marketing, setting goals and objectives are critical in the success of online advertising. Make sure you evaluate the pros and cons before you jump into an online campaign.

Top 10 Essential URL Shorteners

URL shorteners are services in which, let’s say, a long-ish URL is inserted and at the click of a button, the URL is shortened to a maximum 10-character code. When anyone clicks on this code, they are directed to the original URL. Isn't it cool?
Yeah they are amazing following are some URL shortners

Use of URL Shorteners

The important usages are:
Sharing of blog posts on social networking sites;
Tracking visitors & conversions

Top 10 Essential URL Shorteners

There are 100+ URL shortening services. Here, I give you the best of the lot, according to my observation. Your choices can vary so feel free to share it with us.

1. Goo.gl

This is the official tool from Google which not only allows you to shorten unlimited URL’s but helps you track traffic / visits from its very easy-to-access dashboard.

2. Bit.ly

This is a popular and perhaps the oldest tool to share shortened URL’s and builds traffic. The dashboard shows detailed stats of views and clicks, and also gives you access to developer tools and side bar bookmarklet.

3. Ow.ly

This is a very clean and non-obtrusive tool with great sharing functionalities like tracking. You can also bookmark re-tweeted links and check out visitor stats.

4. DyingLinks.com

This is my personal favorite & I would recommend using this for promotions. With this tool, you can decide when the shortened URL will be ‘live’ and ‘die’. You can give the link a custom name and also decide on a specific number of clicks after which the shortened URL will cease to function. Amazing?

5. TinyURL.com

This is another of my favorite URL shorteners with which you can promote affiliate links, redirect URL’s and use custom names for links.

6. SnipURL.com

This is a mass URL shortening tool and comes with an API to create short URL’s in the active browser.

7. Su.pr

Like Google’s Goo.gl tool, Su.pr is the official URL shortening tool from StumbleUpon.com. This tool, besides URL shortening, allows you to syndicate content three ways between StumbleUpon.com, Twitter.com and Facebook.com. You can also schedule posts and the tool recommends the best time to post as per your activity and responses.

8. Is.gd & V.gd

Apart from their easy to remember names, these tools allow you to create Quick Response (QR) codes for the shortened links. You can track traffic from dashboard and preview links before sharing.

9. Scr.im

If you don’t want to share your ‘real’ email ID with unknown people YET have to use the ID to allow others to contact you, use scr.im tool. Enter your email id and the tool will convert it into a non-recognizable format, which you can share anywhere on the web without bothering about stalkers and spammers.

10. Yi.tl

This URL shortening tool enables you to add ‘categories’ to the shortened links to divide the links properly and assist in easy retrieval in future.

Conclusion

If you’re into heavy online promotions, using any of these URL shorteners will be a big help. Don’t you agree?
Don’t forget to share your favorite URL shorteners.
